Embittered by his decades-long inability to attract the opposite sex, the 48-year-old computer analyst opened fire on a women's aerobics class in the Pittsburgh suburbs Tuesday night, killing three women and wounding nine. Four remained hospitalized Friday, one in serious condition.
In a chilling diary posted on the Internet, he complained that he hadn't had a girlfriend since 1984 and hadn't slept with a woman in 19 years. But before he gave up any hope of finding anyone, he turned to Steele, a 69-year-old dating guru from Whittier, Calif.
Steele, according to his online biography, grew up in rural Pennsylvania, obtained a master's degree in psychology, and became a marriage and family counselor in 1976. He began writing books in 1984 and conducts "The Right Attitude Workshop" for men three times a year. He is the owner of Steel Balls Press and is married to a woman 34 years his junior.
In 2006, he told a Canadian newspaper that "women need men to take charge" and that chat livewomen over 30 are "bitter."
Steele, whose real name is John J. White, did not respond to several e-mail requests for comment. Calls to a phone number listed on his Web site went unanswered Friday.
The undated video of the seminar that Sodini attended, first broadcast Friday on ABC's "Good Morning America," shows Steele writing "NICE GUY MUST DIE" on a whiteboard. "I would say that's the problem with most of the guys in the room, that you're too nice," he says.

That probably resonated with Sodini, who disparaged his own mother in his online diary as "The Central Boss" and "very dominant." She has not commented on her son's rampage.
In a video he also posted online, Sodini appeared to take encouragement from Steele's advice.
"RDS says that I have approximately, maybe 15 more years to be successful at this," Sodini said. "So my objective is to be real and to learn to be emotional and to be able to emotionally connect with people. Because when I'm 10 to 20 years older than she is, she has to feel good about this thing."
And in another video in which Sodini gave an online tour of his house, the camera panned over a coffee table with a copy of "How to Date Young Women." "There's some reading material that we're all familiar with," he said.
Evidently embracing Steele's philosophy that a man should act like an adult, Sodini showed off a matching sofa and chair in his living room and said, " Singles Women will really be impressed."

The funerals for two of the victims will be held Saturday, while a third will be held Wednesday. Killed were Heidi Overmier, 46, of Carnegie; Jody Billingsley, 37, of Mount Lebanon; and Elizabeth Gannon, 49, of Pittsburgh.
Hundreds of mourners gathered at a funeral home Friday to pay respects to Overmier and Gannon, whose bodies were in separate rooms across the hall from chat live other. The Rev. Organised by Carshalton Lavender, a community group that manages three acres of lavender fields in this area and puts on a big annual harvest for the public, it was a sort of group sex among lavender fields affair. That’s why I joined my local Residents’ Association last year. Another thing you might want to look into is the Transition Towns movement. It began in Totnes (Devon) as a way of preparing communities for life after oil, but there are now 100 towns and cities across dating ads all over the world, with 900 thinking of joining. If you get involved with your local group you will be doing things like growing and distributing food, and helping to make the most of local resources and skills so that waste is kept to a minimum and recycling to a maximum. I went to a great one about peak oil last year and stayed on almost two hours after chatting to the other attendees. Women with an interest in environmental issues should check out WISE (Women in Sustainability and the Environment) and WEN (Women’s Environmental Network), which has a network of more than 40 groups around the UK. The former campaigns on topics such as waste and nappies; the latter hosts information evenings and debates on issues like clean coal, organic cotton and cosmetics. Both welcome male members. Jobs and job spaces Working from home can be a very lonely experience. Lots of people who, like me, work in the green sector, are freelance and live on a small budget. When I first moved to London I was on the lookout for a workspace with decent rates, good ethics and an interesting and eclectic bunch of self-starting colleagues.
Another workspace I know of and have written about is Village Underground; furniture designer Auro Foxcroft’s ingenious solution to overpriced office space in central London. He has turned disused London tube carriages and shipping crates into a workspace for creative types in East London’s buzzing Shoreditch neighbourhood. Sign up for the next free slot. Activities Festivals are a great way to meet like-minded greens - especially the more eco-conscious ones. BTCV has Green Gym groups all over the country that get together to do some gardening, learn about environmental conversation and chat with people of all ages over cups of tea in the open air. If you can’t find a group or activity that shakes your eco booty however, look for it and if you still can’t find one, just set up your own.

Fast Lane : Speed Dating Services Single Site
There appears to be no end of interesting and unique ways to connect with others in today's marketplace of ideas. For those of us seeking to meet “The One” or perhaps just a companion to share fun times with, "Speed Dating" offers us many interesting options as this recent CNN segment suggests: “Looking for Love: Speed Dating for the Rich and Beautiful” ...or view a more comedic version of the process. Invented in 1998, by Rabbi Yaacov Deyo, speed dating was initially created to help marriage-minded young Jewish singles meet and mingle. Today, however, it has become a popular venue for just about any and everyone seeking to date or find other marriage-minded people.
While some of us may have our own concept of speed dating, namely, dating many people over a relatively short period of time (say a week?), business organizations condense it to dating several people for four or five minutes. That’s all you get. The gist of it is this: An equal number of men and women are typically seated across from one another; each person has between 4-5 minutes to chat with the person opposite them. When the time is up, they move on to the next person and begin the process again. At the end, each person selects who they would like to see again. If two people pick each other, it's a match. Does it work? It depends on who you ask. Some people argue that the people who show up to these events are 100% not in the category of what they are seeking at all and therefore, a waste of time.
Another cites the example of a close friend who has been dating for six months a man she met at a speed dating services. "She enjoyed the process, plus met someone she would NEVER have hooked up with. He is from the south, she is a New Yorker. And he is 11 years YOUNGER!!! But it’s working.” What are the advantages? Overall, the general consensus is that speed dating is more fun and efficient than online dating. He may not lie about anything else, but he will about his height.” Another believes that it is the most efficient way of dating because you pretty much know, in 4–5 minutes, if you're interested in seeing someone again. He found it exciting. “In a group of 20 people, you just never know what the next table brings. You might meet someone with looks but no personality or someone who is not a looker but who is very interesting.” For women, it's the same, “you can tell a lot about a person when you sit down face to face even if it's only for 5-6 minutes.” A common gripe for speed daters is that because you are working within a short time frame people tend to ask the same (boring) questions (i.e.,“what do you do?”). This can be a huge turn off and doesn't really speak to what makes you unique. Sometimes it's just nervousness, but remember, you only have a short window of time; creativity can go a long way.
What are the disadvantages? While speed dating single site have an even number of people, occasionally one person may not show, requiring that a participant sit alone for a shift. Sitting alone, however, can be a learning experience. In one instance, it proved to be quite eye opening: “I sat for a shift or two alone and… you listen to what is going on around you. There was a woman sitting at the next table and I heard her tell three different stories to three different men; she told one that she was just recently separated (for only a few months), another that she had been divorced for three years and the third another story.
She also gave different ages.” Speed dating, like online dating or all dating has its drawbacks and its cautions. Buyer Beware and remember a red flag is a red flag. Ostensibly, one can never really be sure of what’s so, whether you met someone at a club or bar, at a party, or through a friend or online (the workplace is a little different and another can of worms altogether). What choices do you have in the fast lane? If you want to go for the traditional speed dating model, Professionals In The City offers a wide selection of “4 minute seated dating” events for just about every demographic imaginable. Other local venues include FastLife.com and Hurrydate.com. But if you want to accelerate things a bit and are feeling a little experimental there are a few new options available (for free). The speed dating concept is rapidly morphing from the meet and greet wine tasting mixer and formal table-to-table combat venue. Technology also wants in on the market (or maybe it’s just the tech geeks venue for meeting people) and so a few new apps include: Speed dating for your iPhone. SpeedDate.com has launched an iPhone app that allows singles to connect by live videos or via a three-minute instant message. Similarly, there is also a “FunkySexyCool” app where you can meet, flirt and/or date. Apparently, Facebook, until a few weeks ago, also carried the SpeedDate app. Even Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) technology has recently launched a speed dating app. Any Skype users out there? Now you can have your dream man or woman fall right out of the sky with Skype’s SkyCandy. Speed dating does offer a nice alternative to going to clubs or bars (and it’s probably easier on the budget too). It’s a far cry from the half-hour long 1960’s ABC television show, The Dating Game where a bachelorette or bachelor would ask three contestants--whom they could not see--a series of questions and based on their answers, one would be chosen as "the date." Similarly, you are traveling in the fast lane and only have a short window of time to make that winning impression. Creativity can go a long way and could even be that make or break moment. Ready? On your mark, get set, GO!

It seems every night we tell you about a different aspect of our society that's changing because of the recession, but there's one thing the economy can't stop: The search for love. In fact, for some people it's speeding up the speed dating scene. The age-old tradition of dating: Grab a seat, a drink, a bite to eat. But these daters can't get too comfortable, because every ten minutes, it's time to switch. "Women stay seated and the men will rotate and they get ten minutes with each gal," says Susan Sunday, owner of U.S. Dating Solutions in Rockford. It's called speed dating and Sunday says it's becoming more popular than ever as people search for more economical ways to use their time and money. Sunday says, "Obviously because of the economy, I think it's better for people. It's more reasonable and it's easier for people." Instead of paying for 15 individual dates, you can pay just $10 and meet 15 people in one night. "Yes, this is the way to go and for a lot of people that are busy, they don't have time to get on the internet and starting looking for everybody and I'd rather see eye to eye contact," says speed dater Juan Ortiz. Women we spoke to say it's worth chipping in for that face time, when the chips are down. "The guys don't always have to pay for everything, split, share and just simple things, you know, walks in a park. We just want to spend time, not your money," says speed dater Debra Wisc. Sunday says attitudes like that will always keep her in business. She says, "The economy will never change that, people always will want to be with somebody else."
